---

*Protection against excessive solar/UV radiation damage: The best way to decrease the chances of developing skin cancer remains to avoid excessive exposures to the sun and to avoid tanning beds *Photoprotective items (hats, shirts, sunglasses) that are specially designed and can limit UV and sun exposure ( www.coolibar.com & www.sunprecautions.com ). * EPA : provides info about the levels of UV radiation in 60 U.S. cities Heliocare (from Ivax Dermatologicals) is an oral supplement containing a fern derivative that is currently believed to have photoprotective properties and is found only through pharmacies. Sunscreen: Recent developments in the design of sunscreens resulted in the development of sunscreens with Helioplex that appear to offer good protection against both UVA and UVB. Helioplex is currently found in a few moisturizers (Neutrogena SPF 45) and sunscreens (Neutrogena with Helioplex with SPF up to 70 and Baby Aveeno SPF 45). The Environmental Working Group (EWG) investigated the safety and efficacy of 832 name-brand sunscreens and made their recommendations at: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens/summary.php The recommendations of the EWG and the implications of their interesting investigation might lead to future epidemiological and clinical studies that one day might provide more relevant public information regarding the safety and efficacy of using certain skin products on humans. Additional info and handouts about proper photoprotection and how to decrease your chances to develop skin cancer can be obtained from our office.
